Othello

Residents recently asked Adams County commissioners for more than $20,000 to help pay for the proposed Edson Tract Park. Othello potato farmer Pete Taggares said he will donate 20 acres if funding, maintenance and water issues are addressed.

FERRY COUNTY

Curlew

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the Curlew Post Office. During the gold mining boom of 1898, Guy Helphrey decided to make a little money by opening a mercantile. He also became the first Curlew postmaster. Only members of the Helphrey family have held the post. Currently, Janet Helphrey Stephens heads up the office, succeeding her father and grandfather.

GRANT COUNTY

Moses Lake

The police department is urging local businesses to lend a hand in ending a string of burglaries. Chief Fred Haynes has asked Moses Lake merchants to spend one night in their business and report suspicious activity, without confronting suspects.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Harrington

Chandra Larmer, a 1996 graduate of Harrington High School, has proven herself a true leader at Eastern Washington University, honored with the Student Leadership Award. Larmer is a sophomore majoring in marketing. She is a volunteer at Big Brothers and Sisters and the Spokane Child Abuse and Neglect Center, and holds an on-campus job.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

With phase one of the downtown beautification project winding down, local merchants are ecstatic about a low-interest loan the project just received. With the loan, small businesses can apply for money to spruce up buildings themselves.

It’s Rendezvous time again and the Colville park will be filled Saturday with games, booths, entertainment, food and friends.

Samuel L. Kindred, a recently retired brigadier general and deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, has been named vice president of business affairs at Washington State University. Kindred succeeds Sallie Giffen, who retired in May after serving seven years as vice president.

BENEWAH COUNTY

St. Maries

A Benewah County man was arrested recently on charges of manufacturing a controlled substance after sheriff’s deputies seized 114 marijuana plants in a raid. Charles F. Seyferth allegedly conducted his growth operation at an unfinished house on Flat Creek Road, where the raid took place.

BONNER COUNTY

Sandpoint

The Bonner County Commission will consider a request for help to pay for road maintenance on Schweitzer Mountain at a meeting at 10 a.m. today at the courthouse.

BOUNDARY COUNTY

Bonners Ferry

The city pound is looking for volunteers to help with caring for dogs who wind up in its care. Volunteers are needed from 7 to 8 a.m., 1 to 2 p.m., and 6 to 7 p.m. daily, but the hours are flexible. Duties include walking, feeding and watering the dogs, and cleaning out pens. The pound is trying to get enough volunteers to rotate the work shifts. KOOTENAI COUNTY

Coeur d’Alene

The nationally syndicated television show “Gardening in America with Ed Hume” will feature the Coeur d’Alene garden of Bob and Sandi Bloem this Sunday at 9 a.m. The Bloem’s garden is built on a hillside and includes switchback trails, a natural stream, old cherry trees and driftwood benches. The show airs on KXLY-TV, Channel 4.

LATAH COUNTY

Viola

The annual Viola picnic is planned for Aug. 8 at Dead Man’s Flat. Velda Carlson is organizing the picnic, which begins at noon and lasts until the food is gone and parents are tired.

SHOSHONE COUNTY

Wallace

School District superintendent Nancy Vandeventer will be part of a 12-person group on an all-expenses-paid trip to Thailand. The month-long trip is paid for by a grant from the Fulbright-Hayes Scholarship Foundation. The group will visit different schools and universities as well as sit in on classes.

Kellogg

Silver Valley Habitat for Humanity’s three-bedroom, one-bath home on Sunny Slope subdivision is nearing completion. The house is framed and volunteers are working on the interior.
