Kitsap County Tribes Will Greet Canoeists

From Staff

As part of a series of tribal canoe voyages up and down Puget Sound this summer, two Kitsap County tribes will host a ceremonial greeting in Port Gamble Bay on Sunday.

The Suquamish and Port Gamble S’Klallam tribes will be among eight tribes to greet canoeists from 20 tribes and bands journeying from Squamish in British Columbia to Puyallup.

More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the ceremonies, in which each tribe will be given a traditional welcome by singers and dancers that will include storytelling and other events into the night.

The “Power Paddle to Puyallup” began in Squamish last Friday. Sunday’s greeting will mark the end of the leg from Tulalip near Marysville in Snohomish County.
