Mead Boys Take Third In 4A Meet

More teams than usual from Eastern Washington were capable of scoring 50 or more points, which made winning the State 4A track championship a challenge.

Mead’s boys did score 50, but finished third, seven points from the title.

Besides the distance runners, 16 points came in the sprints where Joe Zelinski placed second twice.

Chris Callahan threw 203-11 for third in the javelin, Andy Johnston placed fourth in the discus with a personal record 155-6 and long jumpers Chris McCullough (22-1-3/4) and Mark Stenerson finished fourth and seventh.

Rogers shot putter Justin Ulmer placed fifth.

Mead junior Janelle Edington continued to improve in the post-season, reaching 141-2 for second in the javelin. She was nine inches away from the lead.

“I wanted to win, but I have another year,” she said. “It makes me want to work harder.”

Gonzaga Prep sophomore Carly Barnes continued her late-season mastery of the long runs, finishing third in the 3,200 in a remarkable 10:54.74 and taking fourth in the 1,600 in 4:59.81.

Bubbly Rogers freshman Trina McQueen finished fourth in the 100 at 12.46.

“Actually I’m proud,” she said. “Everyone else is a junior or senior. I have three more years for this.”

Shadle’s Lanaia Jones, a junior, was sixth in the longer run at 11:06.81.

And Mead’s Allie Bailey finished sixth in the triple jump while teammate April Gallagher was seventh in the discus.

GNL tracksters get it done

State 2A track had a distinct Great Northern League flavor to it.

GNL teams won the boys and girls team titles. Four other teams, including Lakeside’s boys and Riverside’s girls, finished among the top 10.

Riverside senior Abbey Wood medaled four times, finishing second in the triple jump at 36-1/4, fourth and fifth in two hurdles finals and on the fourth-place 1,600 relay team.

In the non-scoring pole vault, Tracy Koesel won at 10-6.

Teammate Nora Zprzalka placed in the 1,600 and 3,200, Mickele Hieronymus was sixth in the high jump and Riverside’s 400 relay team also place sixth.

Tim Hart was sixth in the boys 800.

Among the Eagle placers were Mike Witt, who was also fifth in the 1,600, Craig Downey, second in the discus and fourth in the shot put, Trevor Smith seventh in the 1,600 and Pat Chlocherty, eighth in the javelin.

Connie Williams finished third in the 1,600. Katie Kellner, 3,200 and Nikki Petticrew, long and triple jump, were eighth.

Deer Park’s Lisa Pansie was fifth in the 100.
