Salmo Fires Planned
Wilderness
Natural and planned fires could be used to help restore the Salmo-Priest Wilderness area to a natural ecosystem, Colville National Forest officials say.
The public has until June 1 to comment on plans to let fire play its natural role in the 40,000-acre wilderness area in the northeast corner of Washington and a portion of Idaho.
Wood fuel within the wilderness is unnaturally high because of 90 years of fire suppression, officials said.
