Smith In Aspen Golf Hunt

Central Valley High graduate Brandon Smith is four shots off the pace Tuesday after the first round of the American Junior Golf Association’s Aspen (Colo.) Junior Classic.

Smith shot a 3-over-par 75 and is tied for 10th. Denver’s Jon Kosares leads with a 71.

Mike Hastings of Ferris shot a 76, while schoolmate Ryan Camp carded an 80.

Legion baseball

Chris McMurtrey struck out 12 and Brandon Florence went 4 for 4 as the Bandits (1-1) defeated the Royals 9-4 in a Senior American Legion game at Whitworth College.

Mike Robinson tripled during the Bandits’ seven-run first inning. Sean O’Connor went 3 for 4, with two doubles, for the Royals (1-1).

Broadcasting

Radio broadcaster Craig West announced he will step down following the upcoming Spokane Indians baseball season.

West has been the play-by-play man for Indians and Spokane Chiefs hockey games since 1990.

West, a veteran of more than 1,200 Spokane broadcasts, said he is “pursuing opportunities” that would begin after the Indians season in early September.
