Colfax Attorney Seeks County Prosecutor’S Job

A Colfax attorney who once worked for Whitman County Prosecutor James Kaufman announced Thursday that he’s running against his former boss.

Denis P. Tracy, 35, said he’ll run as an independent against Kaufman, a Republican.

Kaufman, prosecutor since 1984, confirmed Thursday he plans to seek another term this fall.

After graduating from the University of Washington Law School in 1990, Tracy served in the merchant marine as an officer aboard a Navy survey ship in the Persian Gulf War.

A native of Kirkland, Wash., Tracy spent summers on a relative’s ranch near Sprague, Wash. In 1991, he returned to Eastern Washington and worked in the Whitman County prosecutor’s office until 1994. He currently is an attorney in private practice.
