Legion Baseball Underway
Last year’s state qualifiers are among early leaders of American Legion AAA baseball following a week of competition.
The Cannons, made up of players from Central Valley, East Valley and West Valley high schools, won two of three games last week.
Victories were a product of offense, the team getting 25 hits in its two victories.
Chad Adamson and Aaron Gilliland had five hits each, and Chris Hilsabeck, Justin Folkins and Ian Harty four apiece during the initial week.
The Bandits, from University and Freeman high schools, broke even in their two games. University graduate Brandon Florence had four hits in a win over the Royals and five for the week.
During AA Legion openers, Spokane Olympic Sports (University) edged West Valley 6-4 despite four extra base hits by WV.
Jon Spear and Mike Johnson had two hits each for the victors. Matt Hietala had two hits for WV.
Spokane Athletic Supply (CV) and the East Valley Boosters broke even in two games.
EV beat SAS 10-4, Dusty James and Isaiah Hankel had three hits apiece.
Parsons leads President’s Cup
Following two rounds of the Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Club Captain’s Cup, Penne Parsons has a seven-stroke lead.
Her two-week net total of 135 leads Kari Barham and Billie Etter who have 142 in first flight.
Second flight leaders are Nancy Monteith with 143 and Gloria Cash with 144. Ellen Boudewyns leads third flight with 148 and Parsons leads fourth flight.
Another President’s Cup round
Liberty Lake Ladies 9-Hole club was also involved in President’s Cup competition during its weekly gathering.
In A flight Elaine Tai shot low gross 59 and Joyce Jacobs netted 41.
B flight went to Pat Thompson with low gross 56 and Sadie Rueckert who had a net 33.
Winning C flight was Deanna Hauser with 61 and Marion McLellan with net 34.
And in D flight, Emma Long had low gross 70 and Gwen Strauss a net 44.
Shirley Schoenberger birded the 16th hole.
Captain’s Cup at Hangman
Winner of the most recent round of Captain’s Cup play for Hangman Valley Ladies Club golfers was Marie Nelson with a net 66.
Ella Leinwebber recorded fewest putts with 30.
During A flight play, Etter, Diane Joss and Jackie Shea tied with low gross 88.
Low net was a tie between Alice Shattuck and Marlene Thies with 73.
B flight winner was Nelson with low gross 94. Alice Hamilton and Sue Henley shared net honors with 73.
Leinwebber had low gross 96 in C flight and Kathy Thiesen netted 71. D flight was won by Barb Hafner with 110, while Susan Crosby and Joyce Mohler netted 75s.
Eclectic for May went to Thies with A flight low gross of 78. Fran Nord and Margaret Sims tied in B with 88. Henley shot 92 for best C score and Crosby had 102 in D.
Net bests for the month were were Lesa Hambleton with 63 in A, Boudewyns with 63 in B, Kitty Duval with 60 in C and Patty Murphy with 71 in D.
Larson is Painted Hills medalist
Painted Hills Ladies Club golfers conducted medal play last week and Susan Larson took medal honors.
She shot a low gross 43 in A flight to lead the outing. B flight winner was Robyn Reamer with 51, C flight went to Caryl Marcus with 52, no-handicap winner was Dana McKinley with 54 and in D flight, Judy Thies shot 59.
Net leaders included Margaret Bainter in A flight and Pat Schlosstein in B with 34. Idell Choate in C flight and Barb Ayers in D netted 32.
Scholsstein and Jean Davis each birdied the fourth hole.
Valley View medal play
A low gross 43 by Betty Grassl led the way during Valley View Ladies Club golf last week.
Grassl paced A flight golfers, while Hauser shot 55 in B flight and Marilyn McMahon had 74 in C. No-handicap golfer Patty McAttee had 61 in her first outing.
Net leaders included Jacobs and Mary Ann Barham with 30 in A flight, Nola Russel and Peg Hallstein with 32 in B and Margie Bratcher with 45 in C.
