Geologists: Slide Can’T Be Stopped

Most of the Aldercrest neighborhood is irrevocably sliding, and residents may as well resign themselves to that fact, geologists say.

The steeply wooded hillsides cannot be stabilized, 130 residents were told Thursday night at the Huntington Junior High School gymnasium.

“It’s not repairable,” said Jon Koloski, a geologist engineer with GeoEngineers Inc. of Redmond.

Eight hours after Gov. Gary Locke declared the area a state of emergency, Koloski said any residents who have not started should make plans to move.

Even if a solution could be found, any measurable improvement would take weeks or months, too late for most homeowners, Koloski said.
