Ten years ago: Howard Baker made the surprise announcement that he would resign as President Reagan’s White House chief of staff on July 1 because of “personal circumstances.”

Five years ago: President Clinton chose Ruth Bader Ginsburg, an advocate of women’s rights, to serve on the Supreme Court.

One year ago: President Clinton opened a year-long campaign against racism with a commencement address at the University of California at San Diego, in which he defended affirmative action and pleaded with Americans to confront deeply held prejudices. A 1939 comic book featuring the first appearance by Batman was auctioned off for $68,500 at Sotheby’s in New York City.
