The dollar on Monday charged toward yet another eight-year high against the yen as slumping Japanese and other Asian markets pushed traders into other currencies and assets.

The dollar also rose against the German mark as the British pound hit a six-year high against the yen and soared against the mark. The Canadian dollar fell to its second all-time low against the dollar since Thursday.

The dollar rose to 146.15 yen in late New York trading, up from 144.72 yen Friday. During trading, the dollar hit 146.57 yen, its highest level since Aug. 24, 1990.
