Classy Senior
Eugenie Garside gives new meaning to the term high school senior. Over the weekend, Garside, at age 98, received her high school diploma. the nonagenarian - who left the third grade in 1909 to help care for her 11 younger siblings - received a standing ovation as she moved her walker across the stage to receive her degree Sunday from a Cap Cod high School. Some of the loudest cheers came from the kids 80 years Miss Garside’s junior who had helped tutor and grade her for a year and a half. Now, the hard-won diploma sits by Miss Garside’s bed at the Pleasant Bay Nursing and Rehabilitatio Center in Brewster next to piles of congratulation cards. And Miss Garside is acting like any other recent high school graduate. “Now I’m going to rest and be lazy,” she laughed.
