Idaho Sees Progress With Y2000 Problem

From Staff

Idaho financial institutions are progressing in addressing the year 2000 computer bug.

The state Department of Finance has conducted on-site visits at 72 state-charter banks, thrifts and credit unions under its jurisdiction.

All were rated “satisfactory” in meeting interim steps to address the century date change, said Kelly Robison, the department’s bureau chief.

The department will soon start a second round of visits to test the backup systems, he added.

National guidelines require all financial institutions to have substantially completed year 2000 preparations by December 1998. They must also have a backup plan in place.

Programming in many older systems recognizes only the last two digits of a date. Experts have warned that they will fail on Jan. 1, 2000, because they will read the date as 1900.
