Equestrian City Riders Bring Mounts From All Over For Area’S Biggest Horse Event

Amy Scribner Staff writer

Spokane’s largest equestrian event galloped through town again this weekend.

Riders from California to Canada competed Thursday through today in the 17th annual Deep Creek Horse Trials at Deep Creek Farms.

The grounds were transformed into a village of RVs and horse trailers. About 200 competitors performed cross-country and dressage events.

The stadium jumping phase of competition will take place today at the farm, off Highway 2 west of Fairchild Air Force Base.

Three of Spokane’s own used the event as a springboard to the North America Young Riders Championships, to be held in August in Denver.

Maggi Holbert, 17, who just graduated from Lewis and Clark High School, has been participating in trials for five years.

“I was one of those kids who every day came home from school and bugged my parents to get me a pony,” she said. After Denver, she plans to take time off to ride with former Olympians on the East Coast.

Joelene Diehl, 20, a sophomore at Eastern Washington University, and Jessica Oxendine, 15, a junior at University High School, also are headed for the Denver championships.
