Group Does Annual Snake River Cleanup

From Staff

Members of River Access for Tomorrow launched from Heller Bar at the mouth of the Grand Ronde River in their annual effort to clean up the Snake River.

The group based in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley has taken to the Snake for the last 14 years in rafts, driftboats and jetboats to search for litter along the banks of the Snake.

This year’s efforts netted between 1,500 to 2,000 pounds of refuse.

Along with doing a good deed for the sake of the river, the annual event gives whitewater enthusiasts a chance to check out their gear before the hitting the rafting season in full stride.

A spokesman for the group estimated around 70 people took part in the effort this year.

“We had people just come off the beach and start helping us,” said vice-president Bruce Stewart. “We don’t usually see that, so that was good.”
