Maryland Post Player Picks Nic
Kammi Cottrell, a 6-foot-1 post player from Annapolis, Md., has signed a letter of intent to play women’s basketball at North Idaho College.
Cottrell is an effective rebounder and scorer, NIC assistant coach Kristi Johnson said.
Baseball
The North Delta Blue Jays pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Spokane Heat 9-8 Sunday in the championship game at the NABF Walla Walla Classic.
Sten Tillberg’s sacrifice fly plated Kevin Sytco, who had tripled, with the winning run for the Blue Jays, the 1997 Canadian national champions.
The Heat scored six runs in the first inning and went on to trounce West Sound 16-6 in their semifinal game.
Chet Womach paced the Heat (9-3) by going 13 for 23 at the plate in the tournament with eight runs and nine RBIs. Teammate Parker Brookers went 10 for 17 and drove in seven runs. The Heat won five of their six games and batted .476.
Danny Crowley had three hits and Cole Young pitched a two-hitter Monday as the North Stars scored four runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Royals 5-1 in Triple-A American Legion action at Jackson Field.
Young struck out seven.
Auto racing
Brandon Traynham extended his Street Eliminator winning streak to four races Saturday night in bracket drag racing at Spokane Raceway Park.
James Arsenault in Super Pro and Pro Eliminator racer Dale Rounsville each won their first race of the season.
On the oval track, two winning streaks came to as halt. Veteran stock car racer Norm Ellefson ended the four-race winning streak of John McCroskey in Fever Fours, while Northwest MiniSuper driver Bill Dashiell snapped a similar four-race run of Tony Berg.
At Stateline Speedway, Terry Halverson of Wenatchee won his second race in as many visits to the Post Falls, Idaho, track. Rick Kellogg, who finished eighth, was the highest finishing Spokane racer.
Randy Lasswell won a second straight race in Street Stocks.
