The Community Colleges of Spokane board of trustees on Tuesday approved bids for $611,000 in construction projects that will be finished this fall.

At Spokane Falls Community College, Mike Coman Construction will build an interactive language lab for $326,700. Coman also will remodel the campus administration building for $144,369.

At Spokane Community College, Associated Construction will renovate the day-care center, install a day-care playground canopy and tricycle paths for $139,852.

In other matters, the board adopted a $53.3 million operating budget for the 1998-99 year, up from $49.2 million last year.

The board also presented the Distinguished Service Award to Paul Redmond, retiring chairman of Washington Water Power Co., and recognized the contributions of Terrance Brown, who will retire as chief executive officer of the colleges on June 30. Brown served 11 years, the longest term of anyone in that position.
