Cannons, Patriots Trade Routs

The leaders in Senior American Legion baseball took turns hammering on one another Wednesday.

Ben Miller had six runs batted in, including a two-run homer, as the Cannons (5-3) defeated the host Patriots 18-4 in five innings to split a doubleheader at Pullman.

The Patriots (4-2) remained percentage points ahead in first place with a five-inning, 13-0 win in the opener. Tyler Brown was 4 for 4 with six RBIs, and Steve Chamberlain (3-0) pitched a five-hitter and scored four times.

Elsewhere, Eric Bell went 3 for 3, with two doubles and two RBIs, as the Blue Devils (3-2) defeated the North Stars 8-5 in the early game at Jackson Field. Chris Eggleston went 3 for 4 for the winners, who are one-half game out of first place. Danny Crowley of the North Stars went 2 for 4.

The North Stars (3-4) roared back at night with a five-inning, 16-4 win over the Bandits (3-5). Taylor West pitched a two-hitter, Brian Schutz went 3 for 4 with a grand slam, and Kyle Ellenz was 3 for 4 with five RBIs.

Golf

Britney Holt of Spokane shot a 9-over-par 80 in the first round of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Holt had nines of 40 and 40 on the 5,802-yard Bay Course to tie for 31st.

Leader Colleen Cashman of Plantation, Fla., shot 74.

Downriver Golf Course’s Scott Shagool and Indian Canyon Golf Course’s David Christenson both shot 1-over 73s and are three shots back after the first round of the Pacific Northwest Section’s Sunriver Oregon Open.

Chris Mitchell of Tumwater Golf Course, formerly of Spokane, was also at 73. Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan was another stroke back.

Dan Potter of Gonzaga Prep shot a 1-under 71 to move up to a tie for 17th at the American Junior Golf Association’s Nabisco Mission Hills Desert tournament at Austin, Texas.

Potter stands at 3-over 147 after two rounds.

Boys soccer

The U-19 Spokane Falcons qualified for the quarterfinals of the 250-team Far West Regional at Albuquerque.

Spokane defeated Montana 2-1 on Tuesday. Billy Sleeth scored for a 1-0 lead, and an own goal gave the Falcons a 2-0 edge. Sleeth, Grant Falco, Spencer Leonard and Mark Cook scored during a shootout as the Falcons topped California South 3-2 on Monday. Wednesday’s match with Arizona wasn’t reported.
