Gm To Shut Down Remaining Factories

General Motors Corp. prepared to turn off the lights at its North American assembly plants and send most of the remaining workers home Thursday because of two devastating strikes.

In a memo to plant managers, the automaker urged them to lay off workers involved in nonessential work, cut back on electricity and other utilities, and limit any necessary work to the day shift to limit a “serious cash drain.”
