In 1767: The British Parliament approved import duties on glass, lead, paint, paper and tea shipped to America. Colonists protested the laws, which were repealed in 1770.

In 1972: The Supreme Court ruled the death penalty, as it was being meted out, unconstitutional. The ruling prompted states to revise their capital punishment laws.
