Cda Boys Look To End Long Drought In State A-1 Tourney
The Coeur d’Alene High boys basketball team will be seeking something no Vikings team has captured in 11 years next week - a state trophy.
Making its first trip to state since 1993-94, Coeur d’Alene (19-4) will meet Capital of Boise (21-4) in a State A-1 opener Thursday at the Idaho Center in Nampa. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. PST.
CdA placed second in 1987.
The Viks’ opener is the second of four games Thursday.
Lewiston (19-6) earned a berth Saturday by defeating Skyview of Nampa 64-54 in a play-in game. The Bengals will take on Pocatello (19-5) immediately following the CdA-Capital opener at 5:30.
In the other openers, No. 1-ranked Skyline (20-4) meets Eagle (14-9) and Borah (20-3) takes on Bonneville (14-11).
Defending champ Madison and runner-up Highland failed to qualify.
A-2: Defending champion Moscow (17-4) finds itself in the weakest side of the bracket when the tourney opens Thursday at Meridian High School.
Moscow takes on Shelley (7-17) at 5:30. St. Maries (16-7) plays in the tourney opener when it meets Sugar-Salem (15-10) at 12:45.
In the other openers, Preston (20-2) battles Bishop Kelly (20-3) while top-ranked Emmett (21-2) goes against Jerome (8-15).
The first two days of the tourney will be held at Meridian. The championship game will be played at the Idaho Center.
A-3: A new champ will crowned when the tourney begins Thursday at Capital High School.
Top-ranked and undefeated Declo (23-0) takes on Butte County (18-8) in an interesting opener.
In other games, Homedale (19-4) meets Grangeville (16-10), traditional power Lapwai (19-4) takes on Kimberly (18-7) and Firth (20- 5) draws West Side (15-8).
The first two days will be played at Capital. The championship game also will be played at the Idaho Center.
A-4: The 16-team field begins play a day earlier, Wednesday, at two sites.
Defending champ Lakeside (17-4), which defeated Clark Fork for the District I title Saturday, will meet Cascade (19-5) in an opener at 5:30 at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.
Clark Fork (14-6) opens against Rockland (13-7) at 2:15 at Caldwell High School.
In other openers at Vallivue, Hagerman (21-1) takes on Council (15-9), Mackay (17-4) goes against Carey (19-6) and returning runner-up and top-ranked Troy (18-5) meets Notus (19-5).
In other openers at Caldwell, Deary (14-8), which shocked Troy in district play, meets Ketchum (13-11); Wilder (19-5) draws Murtaugh (13-12); and Camas County (13-10) takes on Greenleaf Friends (17-8).
The championship game will be held at the Idaho Center.
