High-Jump Champ Teaches By Example

Compiled From Wire Services

Tisha Waller, an Atlanta grade-school teacher, gave a lesson in high jumping Saturday - and fans paid attention.

Performing in front of a crowd that included co-workers, her fifth-grade students at Livsey Elementary School and their parents, the 27-year-old Waller set an American women’s indoor record of 6 feet, 7 inches, at the USA Championships in the Georgia Dome.

Meanwhile, the identical Harrison twins - Alvin and Calvin - finished 1-2 in the 400 meters with the two fastest times in the world this year. Alvin, a gold-medalist on the 1996 Olympic 1,600-meter relay team, led all the way in winning in 45.05 seconds, tying the third-fastest ever.

Duane Ross, former NCAA champion from Clemson, won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.43, the fastest time in the world this season.

Unheralded Ramon Clay sped to a 20.42 victory in the men’s 200, the fastest time in the world for 1998 and a meet record.

Paul McMullen won the mile in 3:55.84, his personal best and the fastest by an American this year.
