Jolley Leads Way To State For Eagles
District 7-2A
The Lakeside girls had a Jolley good time in the Great Northern League district tournament Saturday night at Mt. Spokane High School.
Brianne Jolley, voted the GNL player of the year, scored 23 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead the top-ranked Eagles to a 61-34 win over the Chewelah Cougars and a berth at the State 2A basketball tournament.
Pullman’s boys wrapped up a state tourney berth with a 63-51 win over Colville.
Chewelah’s boys clinched a state appearance with a 58-45 victory over Medical Lake.
Pullman’s girls earned a state berth with a 49-42 upset win over Riverside.
Lakeside (20-1) and Pullman (11-12) will play for the girls district championship on Friday at 7:15 p.m. at Mt. Spokane. Riverside (16-4) will take on Chewelah (14-8) in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 2:45.
Also Friday, Pullman (18-3) and Chewelah (16-6) will play for the boys district title at 9 p.m., while Medical Lake (14-7) and Colville (13-9) will square off in a winner-to-state, loser-out contest at 4:30.

Junior Nikki Petticrew and Jolley proved to be too much for the Cougars to handle.
Petticrew added 16 points and nine rebounds as the Eagles won their 19th straight game.
Lakeside turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and held the Cougars to just one point.
“Our defense generates 70 percent of our offense,” said GNL coach of the year Lisa Schultz. “We love to put a ton of pressure on the ball and score in our transition game. We score a lot easier in transition than when we run our set offense.”
Chewelah hung with Lakeside through the first quarter and trailed 20-16. But the second and third quarters saw the Eagles outscore the Cougars 31-9.
“They are just an outstanding defensive team,” said Chewelah coach Todd Smith. “And Jolley solidifies them. She was all over the place and we just didn’t adjust to their pressure.”
Despite the fact that Pullman’s record stands a game under .500, Schultz won’t be taking them lightly.
“They’ve been playing good basketball lately,” she stated. “And they pose some matchup problems for us. I expect it to be a great game.”

The Greyhounds got a strong inside game and some deadly 3-point shooting in the second half to pull away from a pesky Indians team.
The game was tied at 28 at the half, with Pullman’s Brent Cummings scoring 14 points to keep his team close.
The third quarter opened with Pullman’s Nathan Brown and Aaron Linehan each hitting a pair of 3-pointers as the Greyhounds used a 13-3 burst to take a 10-point lead.
Eric Anderson’s 15-foot jumper to open the fourth quarter pulled Colville to within four at 45-41, but Cummings scored six points in 1-1/2 minutes to thwart the Indians’ rally.
Pullman coach Ken Swanger didn’t have to do too much tinkering at halftime.
“I just told them at the half not to give them any good looks (at the basket) and block them out on the offensive glass,” said Swanger. “We got it done in the second half.”
