Colfax, Dayton Launch 1a Girls

Eastern Washington’s two entries, Colfax and Dayton, will play one another Wednesday in the 9 a.m. opener of the girls 1A state A basketball tournament in the Tacoma Dome.

Reardan, making its debut in the new division after decades as a Class B power, will face third-ranked Life Christian (20-4) at noon in the first round of the boys 1A tournament. Reardan has a 16-7 record.

Dayton, sixth in the final Associated Press poll, is among the girls favorites with a 21-2 record. Colfax takes a 15-8 record to state.

At least two of the possible girls champions will have their title hopes blunted in the first round. Fourth-ranked Okanogan (19-3) is matched against third-ranked Lynden Christian (20-4) in Game 3, and No. 8 White Swan (20-5) and top-ranked Liberty Bell (21-1) will square off in the 9:30 p.m. finale.

Conversely, only one of the top five teams is matched against another ranked team in the first round of boys play. Top-ranked Chelan (21-2) will face ninth-rated Toledo (16-6) at 1:30 p.m.
