Whits’ Mix Named All-Ncic

Whitworth college forward Jeff Mix has won a first-team berth on the All-Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges men’s basketball team.

A 6-foot-6 senior from Spangle’s Liberty High School, Mix has averaged more than 14 points and 6.8 rebounds for a Pirates team that is headed for next week’s NAIA Championships.

Whitworth coach Warren Friedrichs shared coach of the year honors with Bob Gaillard of Lewis & Clark.

Ben Heimerman of Whitworth was named to the second team.

Jared Gallup of George Fox was voted most valuable player.

Whitworth’s Andrea Sherer received a second-team berth on the women’s All-NCIC team.

Nancy Rissmiller of George Fox was named player of the year and Robyn Stewart of Linfield pulled down coach of the year honors.

Baseball

University of Washington (7-3) scored seven runs in an ugly third inning and went on to crush Gonzaga (2-4) 19-4 at Seattle.

The Huskies won the rubber game of the three-game series after a single, Chris Magruder’s two-run double, Dominick Woody’s two-run homer, five wild pitches, three hit batters and three errors gave them a 9-0 lead.

George Arnott’s two-run sixth-inning home run accounted for half of Gonzaga’s runs.

Western Oregon scored 10 runs in the first three innings and went on to defeat Whitworth 12-4 in the Banana Belt Tournament at Lewiston.

Host Lewis-Clark State (8-2) crushed the Pirates (1-4) 19-3 in a subsequent game, breaking a 10-2 game wide on with seven runs in the seventh inning.

Designated hitter Tim Bishop hit a solo home run and drove in three runs for Whitworth. Elliott Strankman led the victorious Warriors with three doubles and five RBIs.

Wrestling

Area sports fans are invited to welcome home North Idaho College’s National Junior College Athletic Association wrestling co-champions at 3 p.m. today in Christianson Gym.

The Cardinals, who finished with seven All-Americans, totaled 101.5 points to share the title with Lassen College, the defending national champion.

Rookie head coach Pat Whitcomb, himself a former NIC wrestling star, was named NJCAA coach of the year.
