Sunnyside 52, Orcas Island 33

Key to the game: Turn overs and balanced scoring. Orcas Island had too much of the former and not enough of the latter. Lisa Hutchison and Marcy Grossman accounted for 82 percent of the Vikings of fense, while the Knights spread the wealth on of fense with eight players scoring.

Other highlights: Orcas Island shot just 30 percent from the floor. If you take Hutchison and Grossman out of the equation, the rest of the Vikings made 11 percent (2-18) of their shots. After grabbing a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Vikings made only 2 of 17 second-period shots.

The Knights, meanwhile, connected at a 40 percent clip from the field. Sunny side Christian broke open a close game by hitting 7 of 14 shots and all four free throws in the final period.

Sprague-Harrington 49, Napavine 41

Key to the game: Big shots, big plays, big D. Sprague-Harrington (18-10) had it all in its maiden state tourney appearance.

Junior Mandi Walters scored consistently and finished with a team-high 15 points. The smallest player on the court, 5-1 freshman Noel Hatten, added 12 points and put her team on top for good with a steal and a layup at the 1:40 mark of the third period.

Other highlights: Carrie Spencer tossed in half of the Tigers’ 18 field goals and also grabbed 12 rebounds. Napavine (20-4) turned the ball over 33 times, but managed to outrebound the Falcons 42-33. Walters was the top rebounder with 14.

The Falcons held Napavine scoreless for the first 5:38 of the third period and outscored the Tigers 10-2 in the quarter. Although S-H shot just 30 percent for the game, it took 22 more shots from the field than Napavine.

Ritzville 44, Tekoa-Oakesdale 29

Key to the game: Shannon Russel was the difference.

The senior forward was the only player to score in double figures. Her 14 points ran her career total to 999.

Ritzville outshot Tekoa-Oakesdale 48 percent to 29 percent from the floor. The losing Nighthawks managed just four assists for the game, three of those by Andrea Hay.

Other highlights: Junior center Heather Cox was the only Nighthawk who enjoyed any kind of success. She finished with eight points, six rebounds and two blocks.

Key to the game: After getting outworked by the shorter Loggers, who had 11 offensive rebounds in the first 5 minutes and 26 for the game, the Mules took control of the boards behind 6-3 junior Sarah Buehler, who had 17 rebounds, seven on the offensive end. Buehler had 16 points.

Other highlights: Gabrielle Johnston had back-to-back steals at midcourt. The first she turned into a layup to put the Mules up 44-43 with 1:16 to play. After the second, Angie Meece, who scored 25 points, picked up her fifth foul. Meece tied a tournament record with six 3-pointers in a record 19 attempts. The Loggers tied the team mark of nine 3s in a record 34 attempts. Fouls hurt the Loggers, with all five starters having at least three, while the Mules had only six.

Wilbur-Creston 76, Shoreline Christian 40

Key to the game: Alyssa Erickson had four points in a 10-0 run in the first quarter and five in an 11-0 run to close the half as the Wildcats ran past the Crusaders.

Other highlights: Erickson finished with 27 points and Lisa Harden had 18, hitting five 3s. The Wildcats were also one 3-pointer short of the team record, hitting 8 of 16. WC shot 52 percent in the first half, rolling to a 46-22 lead. Its 29 points in the second quarter were one short of the tournament record. The Wildcats had a 49-36 rebounding edge with Erickson grabbing 13. Erickson joined the 100-point club, pushing her three-year tournament total to 114 points.

Key to the game: The smaller Dragons were able to hold their own on the boards against the taller Cardinals, only getting out-rebounded 40-35. Samantha Clarke, a 5-9 freshman for the Dragons, had nine rebounds, six on the offensive end.

Other highlights: Waitsburg only got to the foul line four times, making one.

Anne Bickelkaupt, a 6-2 junior, had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Cardinals. Three players had six offensive boards for Waitsburg.

Key to the game: The Trojans fell behind 2-0, but that was before Katie Davis touched the ball. The 6-1 senior converted a three-point play, added two baskets and assisted on the next for a 9-2 lead and that was it.

Other highlights: Davis did it all, scoring 32 points to move into the 100-point club (118), grabbing 18 rebounds, handing out two assists and blocking five shots. The Trojans shot 54 percent (15-28) in the first half that ended with Manson up 36-14 over the tournament newcomers. Although Manson has been to state every year Davis has been in school, the senior missed her sophomore season because of illness and last year because of a serious knee injury.

Key to the game: Morton made the plays in the final two minutes.

The biggest one came with 1 minute left and the Huskies up 48-47. Leanne Coleman buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key to stretch Morton’s lead to four.

Other highlights: Patience Schillinger was 5 of 7 from the floor. She finished with 14 points for the game.
