Junior forward Katie Borton scored nine of her 23 points in the third quarter as West Valley (Yakima) (24-0) blew open a close game to beat Arlington (17-9) 56-42 Wednesday in the first round of the girls 3A state basketball tournament in Seattle.

The Rams led 28-22 at the half but outscored the Eagles 13-4 in the third period.

Fifteen of Borton’s points came on 3-point field goals.

West Valley and Meadowdale were the only teams to enter the tournament without a loss.

The Eagles were led by Kayla Burt’s 21 points. She was the only Eagles player in double figures.

Senior guard Sheila Lambert scored 35 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Seahawks (20-4) to a victory over the Trojans (20-5).

Leah Stewart added 19 points for Chief Sealth. Fife was led by Kelby Saxfold’s 25 points.

Senior forward Nadja Morgan scored 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting to lead the Braves (23-4), who are looking for their third 3A title in four years, to a victory over the Cougars (18-6).

Morgan’s three-point play with 6:19 left in the first half put Blanchet up for good at 13-11.

Alicia Heathcote and Gillian D’Hondt each scored eight points for the Braves.

The Chiefs (25-0) got 27 points and 13 rebounds from Kellie O’Neill to defeat the Indians (17-8).

Issaquah, which shot just 26 percent from the field, trailed 33-26 at the half, but was outscored 30-12 in the second half. Meadowdale outrebounded Issaquah 51-27.

Kim Mains and Hanni Wenzel both chipped in 12 points to lead the balanced Stanwood attack.

Becky Hagelin and Chelsea Keegan combined for 31 points and the Panthers (25-3) outscored the Bobcats (20-4) 18-6 in the fourth quarter for the victory.

Keegan had a game-high 14 rebounds for Seattle Prep.
