Bangor Submarines May Get New Duty
The four oldest Trident submarines at the Naval Submarine Base at Bangor could get a new lease on life as cruise missile launchers.
The subs - the Ohio, Michigan, Florida and Georgia - now are among the eight Bangor Tridents that patrol the seas armed with nuclear missiles.
These weapons will be removed once the United States and Russia agree on a new arms reduction treaty known as START II.
A proposal known as “Trident SSGN” would modify each sub to carry up to 132 conventional Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The Russian government would have to go along with the change, under terms of an arms reduction treaty.
