Bucking Trend, Ontario College Reduces Tuition For Americans

Associated Press

While tuition fees are going up at universities across Canada, Ontario’s University of Windsor is bucking the trend by slashing fees for American students.

The school says it is the first time a Canadian university has decided to charge Americans significantly less than other foreign students.

At present, Windsor - just across from Detroit - has only 17 U.S. students out of an enrollment of 12,000.

Nationwide, there are an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 Americans studying in Canada compared to 21,000 Canadians studying in the United States.

Currently, a Canadian pays tuition of about $2,300 for an undergraduate year at Windsor, while international students pay at least $6,160.

Under the new plan, Americans would pay about $3,500 U.S. a year - significantly less than fees at many U.S. universities.

Windsor has sent letters to 4,500 qualified high school students in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana inviting them to visit the campus in the city of 200,000.
