Gsl Rivalries Continue With Regional Road Matchups
Two of the best basketball rivalries in Spokane take their show on the road today.
The teams from Central Valley High face the Mead girls and Ferris boys as the Lamb-Weston 4A Eastern Regional tournaments resume in the Tri-Cities.
The bad news is that those four Greater Spokane League teams are in the losers bracket.
When the regional opened on Tuesday, Big Nine teams won three of four games for both boys and girls.
That left the surprising Gonzaga Prep boys, sixth in the regular season and fourth at district, and the Ferris girls, co-champions and district runner-up, in the winners bracket, one victory from state.
Play begins at 4 p.m. with CV (19-4) facing Mead (18-6) in a girls game at Richland High School. The Bears won both regular-season games but lost to the Panthers in the district tournament.
The CV and Ferris boys, who tied for the GSL title and split during the regular season on the way to 18-5 records, play at 5:30, also at Richland High.
The Ferris girls (19-4) have the daunting task of slowing down Kamiakin (21-2) in the Tri-Cities Coliseum. At the same time, the Lewis and Clark girls (10-14) meet Wenatchee (16-7) in a loser-out game at Richland.
G-Prep (10-14) had its 9 p.m. semifinal against Wenatchee (18-5) moved to RHS because the Bullpups shocked Big Nine champion Richland in the opener. Richland (19-4) will play Lewis and Clark (16-8) in a loser-out game in the Coliseum at 9.
The GSL is guaranteed two teams to state. If Prep or the Ferris girls win, they make state because four boys teams and four girls teams advance to the Kingdome next weekend. If they lose, they will cross brackets into Saturday’s loser-out, winner-advance games against the survivors of the all-GSL games.
The losers bracket games will begin at 11 a.m. and alternate girls and boys.
The all Big-Nine semifinals match the Richland (21-2) and Kennewick girls (14-9) at 4 p.m. and the Davis (17-6) and Walla Walla boys (15-8) at 5:30 in the Coliseum.
