Broncos, Wildcats Play For Title Again

Jeff Finke Correspondent

Haven’t we been here before?

Only two teams are left standing at the girls State B basketball tournament - the Ritzville Broncos and the Wilbur-Creston Wildcats.

Wilbur-Creston (20-7) opened the semifinal round Friday night at the Arena with a hard-fought 48-45 victory over St. George’s (23-6).

Ritzville (28-0) closed out the session with a convincing 44-25 win over state tourney first-timer Sprague-Harrington (19-11).

History repeats itself.

Last year, the same two teams battled in the championship game with the Broncos coming out on top 33-26.

This season, top-ranked Ritzville has won all four games against the Wildcats.

“We’re just going to forget all about the first four games,” said Broncos coach Howard Manke. “They mean nothing now. We’re both 0-0 as far as we’re concerned.”

Bethany Hopkins, Wilbur-Creston’s first-year coach, knows her team faces a daunting task.

“Our matchups with Ritzville this year have all been about the mental aspect of the game,” she said. “We get out there with them and start thinking too much. We have to remember that basketball is all about having fun.”

Sprague-Harrington actually hung with the Broncos through the first half, trailing 20-14 at the break.

But Ritzville hit another gear in the third period.

Junior Megan Yerxa scored eight of her game-high 16 points and the Bronco defense held S-H to just one field goal in taking a 35-21 lead into the final quarter.

A lot of teams have been known to play some tough defense come tournament time, but Ritzville, which has now won 38 straight games dating to last season, is in a class by itself.

The Broncos have yet to give up 30 points in this year’s tourney.

“If we can do it one more time on defense we’ve got a good chance to win,” said Manke. “We’ve really struggled at times on offense, but our defense has been there for us every night.”

Wilbur-Creston had a little bit tougher time advancing to the finals.

Lisa Arden provided the spark for the Wildcats with some long-range marksmanship.

The senior guard helped the Wildcats jump out to a 14-1 lead in the first period by nailing three 3-pointers.

But W-C’s offense ran hot and cold all game long. The Wildcats went scoreless over the final 2:25, and five points from Miranda Routh-Corker and a Wenchi Liu 3-pointer brought the Dragons to within 14-9 at the quarter.

“We came out a little tentative,” said St. George’s coach Ross Thomas. “We’re a real young team and I think that was a factor for us early on in each half.”

Alyssa Erickson had eight second-quarter points to help the Wildcats take a 28-20 halftime lead.

Arden got Wilbur-Creston off and running to start the third quarter. Her 3-pointer started a 7-0 run as the Wildcats stretched their lead to 15 points.

“I’m basically a 3-point shooter,” noted Arden. “I really don’t like to take it inside much. It felt good to come out and hit a couple of 3’s early … it kind of got us going.”

Give the Dragons a lot of credit for fighting the good fight.

“A lot of teams would have quit, being down 14-1 early,” said Thomas. “But we kept battling and got back into the game. Then we find ourselves down 15 in the third quarter and we still didn’t give up. I couldn’t be prouder of this team.

”(Wilbur-Creston) is a real good team, but if we’d played hard for 32 minutes instead of 22 minutes who knows what would have happened.”

The Dragons had cut the lead to 38-37 when starter Alyssa Henley fouled out. Cherie Dreger hit both ends of a one-and-one to lengthen the lead to three.

Most of the scoring came via the freethrow line in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats made 10 of 17 attempts, while St. George’s hit 10 of 12.

The foul that broke the hearts of the Dragons fans came when Routh-Corker picked up her fifth at the 2:50 mark with her team trailing 43-40. Dreger stepped up and hit both of them, and for all intents and purposes that was the ballgame.

“That really helped us when (Routh-Corker and Henley) fouled out,” said Arden. “They were making some big plays down the stretch for them.”

But that’s ancient history now.

“We know we have to step up and play some tough defense against Ritzville,” Arden stated. “Hopefully, I’ll keep myself calmed down, so I can help the rest of the team stay calm. That will be a big key for us. It will be a competitive game against them. It always is. We like to battle each other but we’re also friends off the court.”
