Carrousel Won’t Open Until April 4
The Riverfront Park Carrousel will remain closed until April 4, a month later than the usual reopening.
During routine maintenance, it was discovered that the original center mast, made of steel, needed straightening. Inspectors also found the bent pole had contributed to wearing out several bearings, said Craig Butz, Riverfront Park assistant manager for operations.
New bearings are being manufactured and some maintenance still needs to be done, Butz said. The parts and labor for the work is expected to cost $11,000, he said.
Plans call for the Carrousel to be open weekends from April 4 through Memorial Day, when it will open daily for the summer.
The Carrousel is traditionally closed in January and February for paint touch-ups and restorations of the horses. It made its debut in 1909 and was originally located at Natatorium Park. The Carrousel was moved to Riverfront Park in 1975. , DataTimes
