Flood Prevention Grant Received

Associated Press

Bingham County has received a $50,000 grant to help prevent more Snake River flooding near Interstate 15, Gov. Phil Batt has announced.

The money will go toward a $160,000 project removing 70,000 yards of gravel from a river channel.

Floods last spring deposited huge gravel bars next to the interstate in Blackfoot.

The state Bureau of Disaster Services says current snowpack conditions make the area vulnerable again, putting 500 homes, 40 businesses, the airport, a grade school and other sites at risk.

The grant will be matched with funds from the Army Corps of Engineers.
