Free Disposal Of Pesticides

From Staff Reports

The state Department of Agriculture is offering free disposal of hazardous pesticides to farmers and other northeastern Washington residents.

Banned pesticides may be turned in with no questions asked and no records kept, program coordinator Joe Hoffman said. The department will assume liability for the products it receives under the “amnesty” collection.

People who want to participate are asked to call the Department of Agriculture at (360) 902-2056. Hoffman said the department needs to know what chemicals it will be receiving.

Participants will be issued certificates allowing them to transport the pesticides legally as well as maps directing them to the collection sites. Collections will occur May 12 in Republic, May 13 in Kettle Falls and May 14 in Davenport.

The program is not limited to agricultural products or those that are banned. It covers a wide range of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides and other “‘cides,” including plant growth regulators.

Three products cannot be accepted. They are 2,4,5-T and silvex herbicides, which contain dioxin, and pentachlorophenol wood preservatives, for which there no longer is any U.S. disposal facility.
