Wizards Coveting Sprewell
The Washington Wizards are happy to hear that suspended Golden State Warriors shooting guard Latrell Sprewell would like to play with them next season and indicated that the feeling is mutual.
The problem is that one or more of the current squad would have to go in exchange for Sprewell, and no one is wild about that idea.
“It puts a different spin on it because if we go after him some of us won’t be here,” said swingman Tracy Murray. “But that’s the nature of the business. If it’s a good deal, they’ll ship anybody out of here.”
Sprewell said on ESPN’s “Up Close” that he would like to play with the Wizards to be reunited with forward Chris Webber because they have “some unfinished business.”
The two played together Webber’s rookie year with the Warriors, who were viewed as one of the up-and-coming teams after winning 50 games that season. Then general manager-coach Don Nelson traded Webber to the Wizards the following season, putting the franchise in a spiral that has yet to end.
“It’s never been a secret that I want to play with him and I want him to be here,” Webber said. “I don’t want to lose what we have, but our first priority should be to get Rod (Strickland) back and our next should be to get Spree.”
Strickland, a point guard, will be a free agent this summer.
Robinson sidelined
Glenn Robinson, Milwaukee’s leading scorer, has been placed on the injured list.
A bone scan revealed that Robinson suffered a bone compression to the tibial plateau in the left leg. He was hurt in the fourth quarter of the Bucks’ victory over Denver last Thursday.
The injury requires no treatment, according to the Bucks, but Robinson will be restricted from running as the injury heals. He is expected to miss up to three weeks.
