Higher Ed Summit To Be Held Here

From Staff And Wire Reports

University presidents and education experts from 15 states will meet in May in Spokane to discuss competition from private institutions, Internet colleges and degrees awarded on the basis of competency tests rather than course work.

The Washington State Higher Education Roundtable Summit will open at noon May 18 at Cavanaugh’s Ridpath. The event is expected to draw 160 guests, said Sherie Story, research analyst with the House Higher Education Committee.

Story and others are organizing the effort on behalf of the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education, a Boulder, Colo.-based policy and research group for 15 states. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has agreed to fund a series of regional higher education summits for the commission.

Story said Spokane was chosen for the summit because of its easy access to officials from all Western states, not because of the current fight over who will control higher education services downtown.
