Front-runners in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race took their mandatory 24-hour layovers in the 1,100-mile race from Anchorage to Nome. Dee Dee Jonrowe of Willow, Alaska, led after going an extra 38 miles before her break.

Tonia Kwiatkowski, the fourth-place finisher at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January, will replace Olympic champion Tara Lipinski at the world championships. Lipinski withdrew this week because of a glandular condition.

Thomas Alsgaard of Norway won a 10-kilometer cross country ski race to clinch the men’s World Cup overall title.
