Travel Fair Shows Off Corbin Activity Center’s Lifeblood

(From For the Record, March 13, 1998): Number wrong: The phone number to the Corbin Senior Center is 327-1584. The wrong number was printed in Thursday’s North Voice section.

The Corbin Senior Center will be hosting a flurry of activity starting this weekend.

The center is sponsoring its annual travel fair on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Corbin’s 1998 tour schedule will be available for perusal and potential tourists will have a chance to meet escorts.

“It’s just an all-around get acquainted with Corbin Travel Tours,” said Karen Cornell, the center’s director.

Sandy Parker, chair of the tour program, said the travel packages are the financial lifeblood of the Corbin Activity Center. The senior and activity center’s are nonprofit entities.

“It’s the biggest part of Corbin. It’s our income; it basically runs the center,” Parker said.

So that would help explain why the travel package has so much to offer senior travelers.

Australia, the Caribbean and Hawaii, are some of the more exotic places to see. But Branson, Mo., is the top destination among tourists.

“It’s our No. 1 seller,” Parker said of Branson, a clean-cut version of Las Vegas in the nation’s heartland.

As for tour escorts, Corbin has 25 of them ranging in age from 45 to 80, Parker said. Part of Saturday’s fair will include a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Cost is $4 plus tax.

The center also will serve a traditional Irish meal for St. Patrick’s Day at noon Tuesday. Reservations are required and cost is $4.32.

Here is a list of other activities going on at Corbin:

Art classes using oil and watercolors.

Three levels of Spanish classes and German.

A writer’s workshop and genealogy course.

Bridge, ballroom dancing and aerobics.

And every Wednesday from noon to 3 p.m., income tax experts are on hand to help people file their returns.

And next month:

The center will host its annual housing fair on April 18.

On April 24 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., the center will host a “Branson Bash & Buffet.” Prizes will be given away. The cost is $5.50 plus tax.
