Zags Charge Matadors, But Lose

Gonzaga rallied from six runs down in the eighth inning, but lost 8-7 in the 10th to Cal State Northridge in non-conference baseball action Thursday at Northridge, Calif.

Two errors in the eighth helped the Bulldogs score four unearned runs in the inning. Scott Asan of Gonzaga hit a two-run home run to knot the game at 6-6.

Luke Gradishar hit a solo home run in the top of the 10th for the Bulldogs, but a sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Kevin Patrick gave the Matadors the win.

College softball

North Idaho College (3-3) swept Walla Walla Community College in a doubleheader.

Denise Devereaux struck out six in the first game, and the Cardinals scored four runs in the sixth to give them the 4-0 win.

In the second game, the Cardinals used two errors and a walk to score five runs in the fourth for a 6-1 win.

High school soccer

Moscow (1-0) opened the North Idaho League with a 4-1 win over host Lewiston.

Mike Beard scored two goals for the Bears, who scored all four goals in the first half.

Wednesday college baseball

San Diego State broke open a close game with 13 runs in the middle innings and went on to defeat Gonzaga 15-2 in a non-conference game at San Diego.

Leading 2-0, the Aztecs scored twice more in the fourth inning, seven times in the fifth and twice more in the sixth.

Designated hitter Oscar Lopez, who opened the fifth inning with a triple, also singled in a run during the inning, which included six hits and three wild pitches. Lopez had four of San Diego State’s 16 hits.

Kevin Workman, Gonzaga’s first baseman, slapped three singles for the Bulldogs and drove in one of their two runs with an eighth-inning base hit.

The Community Colleges of Spokane used a seven-run fifth inning to overcome a three-run deficit and cruise to a 14-6 non-league victory over visiting North Idaho College.

The Sasquatch used Adam Munson-Young’s three-run triple and his steal of home to turn a 6-3 NIC lead into a 10-6 advantage for CCS. The Sasquatch added two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings to put away the Cardinals.
