Maggert Keeps Lead
Jeff Maggert felt the wind die and figured the scores would go down, too.
He got his game in gear just in time to keep a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Honda Classic. Maggert made three straight birdies on his back nine for a 68 and is at 9-under 135.
If only John Daly could have taken the same cue.
Daly, one off the lead when the second round began, instead bogeyed four of the first five holes in harmless conditions and had to make a 4-footer for par on the 18th just to make the cut.
One stroke behind Maggert is Lee Janzen, who made an eagle for the second straight day out of the same bunker on the 16th in a round of 66.
Kristi Albers tied an LPGA record, but still trails by five shots in the Welch’s-Circle K championship at Tucson, Ariz.
Helen Alfredsson carded an 8-under-par 64 in the second round, good for a 12-under 132 and a four-shot lead over Charlotta Sorenstam, Chris Johnson, Tina Barrett and Michelle Estill.
Albers led the next tier at 137, recovering from her first-round 75 with a 62.
Only Laura Davies (1991), Hollis Stacy (1992) and Kathryn Marshall (1997) have played a par-72 LPGA course in 10-under. Vicki Fergon was 11-under on a par-73 layout in San Jose, Calif., in 1984.
Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, stands at 141.
Mike McCullough, J.C Snead, David Lundstrom and Buzz Thomas fired 5-under par 66s to share the lead after the opening round of the Toshiba Senior Classic at Newport Beach, Calif.
Jose Maria Canizares, David Graham, Hubert Green and Dana Quigley finished with 67s to trail by a shot.
