Valley Burglary Suspects Tracked Down By A Pay Phone

Some burglars are just too romantic.

One, who broke into Ichabod’s East at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, stopped long enough to call his girlfriend from a pay phone inside the tavern.

The woman returned the call about an hour later, using *69 because she didn’t know where he was.

By then, sheriff’s deputies were inside the tavern looking for clues. They answered the call, without letting on about who they were. Thanks to the chat, deputies have a suspect they expect to arrest soon.

They believe he had help, and are also looking for his accomplices. The burglars apparently entered the tavern at 12116 E. Sprague through an unlocked roof hatch, sheriff’s deputies said.

Police found two holes in the ceiling, including one that appeared to have been caused by someone falling through.

They found pieces of building insulation under the pay phone used by the suspect.

The burglars emptied three pull tab machines, removed money from a March of Dimes donation display and took a small amount of cash from the business, sheriff’s deputies said.
