Collapsed Sicilian Cathedral Will Be Restored

Associated Press

Since the frescoed dome and right wing of an 18th-century Sicilian cathedral caved in two years ago, experts have debated whether it could be restored. Now, newspaper said Saturday, they’ve decided to try.

Some of the surviving segments of St. Nicholas Cathedral’s dome in the southeastern city of Noto can be combined with new pieces and integrated into the restoration, architects have determined.

The cathedral is considered a gem of Baroque architecture in Sicily. Noto’s architecture has been listed by the United Nations as part of the world’s cultural heritage in need of protection.
