Daniel Earns Academic All-America
Washington State senior Carlos Daniel was again recognized as one of the top 15 men’s basketball student-athletes in the nation with his selection to the 1998 GTE Academic All-America third team Tuesday.
The 6-foot-7 forward is one of only four WSU student-athletes ever to attain GTE Academic All-America status twice. This is a repeat performance for Daniel, who was also a third-team pick in 1997. He owns a 3.51 cumulative grade-point average as a history major.
Senior Pat Garrity of Notre Dame, a pre-professional science major with a 3.68 GPA, was honored as the GTE Academic All-American of the Year.
Washington State also placed more men on the Pacific-10 All-Academic squad than any other conference school.
Daniel became the first Cougar to earn first-team recognition from the league three years in a row.
The Cougars placed sophomore Blake Pengelly of Eugene, Ore. (3.67 GPA, undeclared) on the Pac-10 second team along with juniors Will Hutchens of Dayton, Wash., (3.77, crop/soil science) and Leif Nelson of Riverside, Calif. (3.81, psychology). Kojo Mensah-Bonsu, a junior from England (3.00, general humanities), was an honorable-mention selection.
On the women’s side, sophomore Joanna Smith of North Vancouver, British Columbia (3.14 GPA, undeclared) was given Pac-10 honorable mention.
Johnson returns to Chiefs
The Spokane Chiefs announced left wing Ben Johnson has returned to the team. Johnson spent the first part of the season with the Chiefs, before being assigned to the Rochester Mustangs of the United States Junior Hockey League. In his 24 games with the Chiefs, Johnson totaled one goal and five assists.
Ex-Cards honored
Former North Idaho College Cardinal Steve Helm was voted co-basketball player of the year in the Frontier Conference.
Helm, a senior guard at Montana State-Northern, shared the award with Brian Watson of Montana Tech.
Toby Stack, another ex-Cardinal, was given honorable mention. Stack is a junior guard at Montana StateNorthern.
Soccer
Philimon Tudor scored three goals to send the visiting Lake City Timberwolves to a 9-0 North Idaho League win over the Lewiston Broncos.
Carmine Terracciano and Connor Quinn each added a pair of goals and an assist for Lake City. The Timberwolves outshot Lewiston 31-9 for the game.
Baseball
Josh Mann and Rick Pettite each collected three hits to spark the Post Falls Trojans to a 11-0 victory over the host Riverside Rams.
At Moscow, Jasper Graham drove in three runs and pitchers Jeff Brennan and Aaron Cohen combined for 13 strikeouts as the Lake City Timberwolves romped to a 11-1 non-league victory over the Moscow Bears.
The Coeur d’Alene at West Valley game was rained out and rescheduled for today at 3:30 p.m.
Softball
East Valley put up 11 first-inning runs on the scoreboard, nine of them unearned, and the visiting Knights cruised to a 13-0 win over the Lake City Timberwolves.
At Cheney, Katelyn Tatum and Kelli Babcock hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings rallied for a 10-5 victory over the Cheney Blackhawks.
