Hornets Sting Jazz
Utah’s 11-game winning streak ended Wednesday night when Glen Rice scored 26 points and the Charlotte Hornets roughed up Karl Malone and the Jazz in a 111-85 victory in Charlotte, N.C.
Malone missed six of his first seven shots, got into foul trouble and then got scratched across the eyes when David Wesley tried to block a shot late in the second quarter. Malone, who played the second half with noticeable swelling and redness around both eyes, finished with 17 points.
Utah also lost forward Antoine Carr and coach Jerry Sloan in the second quarter. Carr limped off with a strained right hamstring.
Sloan was ejected after he came onto the court to argue with the officials after Malone’s injury.
Sprewell in trouble again
Suspended basketball star Latrell Sprewell was charged with reckless driving in Martinez, Calif., stemming from a car crash that injured two people, the district attorney’s office said.
Sprewell is accused of injuring two people after driving 90 mph and slamming his car into another vehicle as he tried to swerve back onto a freeway from an exit lane. He struck sand barrels and smashed his 1997 Mercedes into a Toyota Corolla, which flipped when both cars crashed into a concrete wall.
