Taylor Splits At Ncaas
Zac Taylor of Sandpoint won his opening-round match before losing in the second round on a tiebreaker Thursday in the NCAA Division I wrestling championships.
Taylor, wrestling at 167 pounds for the University of Minnesota, defeated Lionel Halsey of Cal State Bakersfield 15-3 before falling 6-5 to Glenn Pritzlaff of Penn State.
Unbeaten Joe Williams won twice to stay on pace for his third straight individual title as Iowa overcame first-round problems to take the lead.
The Hawkeyes have 34.5 points through two rounds, with No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State second with 32.5 points. Minnesota is third with 32 points, followed by Penn State with 25 and Oklahoma with 24.
The Hawkeyes, winners of the last three titles and six of the last seven, qualified 10 wrestlers for the tournament. Coach Jim Zalesky figured they would win seven or eight first-round matches. They won five.
