Tourney Draws 375 Teams

An estimated 375 youth and adult soccer teams will gather at Spokane Falls Community College beginning this weekend to participate in the GTE Wireless WSYSA Five-a-Side Soccer Tournament.

Conducted over two weekends - Saturday and Sunday plus March 28-29 - the tournament will attract an estimated 7,000 players, coaches and spectators, said tournament director Cor van der Meer.

The Five-a-Side Tournament now has state championship status, said van der Meer, who also serves as the Community Colleges of Spokane men’s and women’s coach. As a result, he said, “we’re registering teams from all over Washington and from Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia as well.”

Saturday and Sunday, boys and girls recreational and under-12 developmental teams are scheduled to play. Adults also will play in men’s or women’s open divisions and in various co-ed divisions.

Most games are scheduled between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
