Zags’ Negative Streak Reaches 15
Gonzaga University’s baseball team went another day without getting a break.
Jeff Pritchard’s leadoff homer in the ninth inning tied the game, and Josh Goldfield highlighted a threerun 11th with a two-run double, as visiting San Francisco (20-8, 8-2) defeated GU 12-9 in a West Coast Conference game Friday.
Gonzaga (2-17, 0-7), on a 15-game tailspin, led 9-5 after seven innings. Bulldogs designated hitter George Arnott singled home a run during a five-run first and hit a solo homer, his fourth, in the two-run third.
The Dons rallied for three runs in the eighth on a hit batter, sacrifice fly and infield single.
The teams meet again today for a doubleheader at August/A.R.T. Stadium.
College track and field
Eastern Washington University’s Ryan Cole placed fourth and Bob Omlin finished fifth after the second and final day of the decathlon competition at the Tri-Cities Sports Festival meet in Richland.
Cole, a freshman, finished with 5,662 points and Omlin, a senior, scored 5,481. Omlin, third after the first day, did not finish the final event, the 1,500-meter run, after spraining his ankle during the pole vault.
Jason Williams of Ricks College finished first with 7,274 points.
EWU freshman Marni McGregor finished eighth in the heptathlon with 2,668 points. Idaho’s Samantha Cooney won with 4,360 points, and teammate Kelly Hont (4,043) was third. LaTroya Mucker of Washington State, the first-day leader, pulled out after the long jump.
Boys golf
Mead’s Brian Fong finished as medalist and Ferris won the team competition at the 28-team Kennewick Invitational at Tri-City Country Club in Kennewick.
Fong shot a 2-under-par 63 for a two-stroke margin over Ferris’ Corey Prugh. Reid Hatley, also of Ferris, finished third with a 66.
Ferris finished at 10-over 270, 11 strokes ahead of Mead. Lewiston placed third with a 285, one less than Central Valley.
Boxing
Mahlon Kerwick of Lilac City Boxing Club lost to Jacob Hudson in the 132-pound semifinals of the U.S. Boxing Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo.
Hudson, of Augusta, Ga., won the computer-scored bout 21-6 and advanced to today’s final.
Kerwick’s finish was the best for a Spokane boxer since Frank Vassar in 1993. Kerwick, 17, of University High, will be a No. 3 or No. 4 seed during the Goodwill Games box-off in June.
Youth hockey
Sage O’Hare scored twice as Spokane’s Young American Bantam A team defeated California 4-3 in the Western District regional at Tacoma.
Ben Nelson and Cris Wagner also scored for Spokane, which is 3-0 at the tourney and meets Alaska in Sunday’s title game.
