Witty Wins Again
World record holder and silver medalist Chris Witty won her second straight World Cup Final 1,000-meter speedskating race.
The skater from West Allis, who also took bronze at 1,500 meters in Nagano, Japan, skated in 1 minute, 17.08 seconds to eclipse the Pettit National Ice Center record she set Friday at 1:17.41 in winning the three-day meet’s first event.
Jeromy Wotherspoon of Canada won the men’s 1,000-meter race in 1:10.76, Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann of Germany, the gold medalist in Nagano and the world record holder at the women’s 3,000 meters, won at that distance in 4:08.26, and Roberto Sighel of Italy captured the men’s 5,000 in 6:35.02.
The three winning times were also track records.
