G-Prep Edges Defeats Saxons In A Shootout

Ferris and Gonzaga Prep, two of the favorites in Greater Spokane League soccer, opened the counting portion of the season Monday in a classic battle.

The visiting Bullpups escaped with a 1-0 shootout victory. It appeared they would win in regulation after Nick Ascolese scored with less than 4 minutes remaining, but Prep was called for being offsides.

In the shootout, Saxons’ goalkeeper Tommy Servine stopped Ascolese’s shot, but was called for moving too early and Ascolese converted on his second attempt. After a Saxon miss, Mik Baltins nailed a shot to capture the shootout 5-4 for Prep.

North Central’s Owen Turnbull had two goals and an assist in the first half as the Indians defeated visiting Lewis and Clark 5-3, University’s Mike Damascus scored three goals as the visiting Titans defeated Mt. Spokane 3-1, Mead’s Ken McArthur headed in Troy Ready’s corner kick at the 53-minute mark to break open a close match as the Panthers prevailed at Shadle Park 4-0 and Ben Zimmerman and Matt Johnson each had two goals in Central Valley’s 7-1 win at Rogers.

In the completion of a suspended game, Joe Chimienti’s sacrifice fly gave Mead its second run in the 10th inning as the Panthers (1-1) edged Mt. Spokane (0-2) 7-5.
