Ccs Women Secure Second In Nwaacc

A 15-run fourth inning by Community Colleges of Spokane in the nightcap paved the way for a doubleheader sweep over visiting Walla Walla Thursday as the Sasquatch remain in second place in the NWAACC with a 15-9 record.

The Sasquatch finish the conference season at home Saturday against Bellevue Community College. The top four teams advance to the NWAACC tournament.

CCS benefited from eight walks, four errors and six hits in the big fourth inning that led to a 15-7 win in the nightcap. In the first game, the Sasquatch started fast with a four-run first inning on the way to an 8-1 win.

Jaime Christenson had three RBIs in the second game and teammates Sara Shumacher and Lisa Bocook added two RBIs each.

In the first game, Wendy Stredwick sparked CCS with a two-run double in the first.

Pitcher Holly Vanwert (15-8) picked up both wins, including a seven-inning, six-strikeout effort in the first game. She came on in relief in the third inning of the second game.

College basketball

Finding a possible replacement for All-Big Sky Conference forward Karim Scott, Eastern Washington University’s men’s basketball program has signed Diablo Valley Community College transfer Wil Levy to a letter-of-intent to play basketball for the Eagles next fall.

The addition of the 6-10, 210-pound Levy gives the Eagles six signees to help fill the void left by five graduating seniors from last season’s 16-11 team that finished third in the Big Sky Conference. Eastern also announced that 1997-98 redshirt Darrell Walker from Marysville, Wash., has been awarded a scholarship after walking on last fall.

One of only 20 first-team all-state community college players, Levy started every game while at Diablo Valley. He was a first-team All-Bay Valley West League selection after averaging 18 points, 9 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game as a sophomore. He averaged 14 points, 8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks as a freshman.

Golf

Nicole Materne, former Mead High School state champion, won her first women’s professional golf tournament with a 7-under par performance in the recent Players West Golf Tournament at Palm Desert, Calif.

Materne received a check for $2,300 in winning the title with a 54-hole total of 203. She broke the course record by two strokes with a first-round 65, tied her own record with a second-round 65 and finished with 73 for a six-shot victory.
