Bloomsday Entries Way Down This Year

FROM FOR THE RECORD (Wednesday, May 6, 1998): Correction Bloomsday registration: The number of registered participants for Bloomsday was 53,389. The number was reported incorrectly in the Sunday and Monday editions of the paper.

Bloomsday registration may be headed for a 12-year low, despite predictions that this might be a record-setting year.

In March, Bloomsday President Connie Bischoff - citing a mild winter and the novelty of a new course - predicted the race might get a record 65,000 entrants. But as of 4 p.m. Friday, there were 51,525 runners registered for the Sunday race, said Jerry O’Neal, Bloomsday board member.

Each year, the race picks up a few thousand late entries on Friday and Saturday. A final number won’t be available until tonight. There were 54,261 registered participants in 1987 - the lowest in the past 11 years. Last year, 55,270 signed up to run.

Bloomsday participants can still pick up their race packets and complete late registration at the Spokane Convention Center today from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
